John Schatzlein

Obituary of John Schatzlein

Schatzlein, John died peacefully on June 30, 2019 at the age of 70. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 49 years, daughters Melissa Cummings (Ryan) & Erica Schatzlein (Douglas Gerlach), grandson Killian Cummings, sisters Sr. Joanne Schatzlein OSF and Mary Selisker (Tom), and numerous nieces and nephews. John spent his life advocating for people with disabilities and working in the rehabilitation field. His independence and optimism inspired countless people, and his advocacy on local and national boards put a spotlight on disability and accessibility awareness. John was active in sports both before and after his spinal cord injury. He played wheelchair basketball and softball, and was instrumental in starting USA Sled Hockey, which is now a Paralympic sport. John was, above all, a fighter for equality, peace, and justice. He was a loving and proud husband, father, and grandfather who valued spending time with his family. He had a strong moral compass and always spoke out for what he believed was right and fair. He had a gigantic heart and a gift for connecting with people. His caring and compassion will be his legacy. Visitation at 10am Saturday, July 13, 2019 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 1701 W.
