William von Hassel

Obituary of William von Hassel

William von Hassel, of Bloomington, died age 90 on May 20, 2019.

Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1929 and grew up on Long Island. He served in the army in Japan after graduating from high school. Upon leaving the army, he attended Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, graduating in 1953 with an engineering degree. He later earned a master’s degree at Syracuse University. He married his wife Doris in 1952 and they were married for 50 years. Doris passed away in 2003.

Bill worked for GE in Massachusetts, upstate New York, and Germany, then for several other companies in New York and Ohio before landing at Dairy Queen here in Minnesota. He retired from Dairy Queen in 1996.

He traveled the world and was never happier than when he was planning his next trip. He was sorry to see his traveling days come to an end, but still kept a hand in by poring over travel brochures. He was a wonderful photographer and leaves behind many photos from his travels, some shots of his beloved 1962 Corvair, along with a few embarrassing family pix.

In recent years, Bill volunteered at the Mount Olivet Homes. He called himself “a flunky with an engineering degree,” but loved donating his time.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Lynn; nieces and nephews Carl (Eileen) of NJ, Richard of NC, Cheryl (Ed) of NC, Lois (Bob) of NY and Eric (Dianne) of AK, as well as many cousins.

Special thanks to the many friends who enriched his life and to the wonderful staff at the MN Masonic Home in Bloomington for their tender care.

Charitable contributions to the Humane Society, the Mount Olivet Home, or the Mount Olivet Careview Home are welcome.

Private service.
