Obituary of Barbara Jean Hakes
Barbara Jean Hakes (Wherley), age 65, passed away with her family by her side, April 30, 2019.
She was born in Duluth September 28, 1953 to Robert and Helen Wherley. She grew up on Tryrol Street in Duluth and Ft. Myers Beach, Florida.
During high school, Barb participated in synchronized swimming. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1972 with her high school sweetheart, Chuck Hakes, who would become her loving husband for 40 years. They married in September 1978.
Barb worked at Mr. Steak when she was 18, before coming to work at Chalet alongside her dad. She became Manager and bought Chalet in 1991 as a legacy to pass onto her three daughters.
Barb was very hard working, very caring; with a big heart.
Barb and Chuck raised their three girls in Alborn, where she lived since 1976.
She loved going wheeling with family, Sunday dinners and tubing down the river. Barb had a green thumb as well.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Wherley; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bette and Jerry Hakes; brother-in-law, Dan Hakes; nephew, Mike Hakes; and good friend, Terry Dubla.
Barb is survived by her husband, Chuck; daughters, Leah (Jesse) of Alborn, Anna (Justin) of Proctor and Karlee (Kyle) of Alborn; three grandchildren, Lexi, Amber and Rylee; three step-grandchildren; mother, Helen; sister, Wendy; brothers, Mike and John; nephews, Todd, Cory and Pat; and other nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank St. Luke's ICU staff for taking good care of Barb. Also a special thanks to the family and friends who were with Barb until the end.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-6 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Chalet Lounge, 4833 Miller Trunk Hwy, in Hermantown.
