Obituary of John Zarins

John Zarins, 80, of Duluth died peacefully on Sunday, May 5th with his loving wife, JoAnn, by his side.

Born in Riga, Latvia, he came to the States at the age of 11. John graduated from Brookings High School and South Dakota State University. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. John worked for the State of Minnesota for 35 years before retiring in 1999.

John was fortunate to tour and cruise to over 40 countries. While extensively exploring North America, he especially enjoyed his trips to the BWCA, so close to home.

Over the years, he was passionate about being active and physically fit. He loved skiing, biking, weightlifting, and walking, including regularly walking nearly three miles home from work.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Janis and Biruta Zarins; brother, Peter; and nephew, Alex Sahlberg.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnn; sister-in-law, Bea Zarins; brother-in-law John Sahlberg; niece, Lisa Rinde; nephew, Peter Sahlberg; great niece, Alexa Rinde; and other relatives.

A private celebration will be held.
