Paul, Leann and Whitney our thoughts and prayers are with you. Although I was not close to Derek I always enjoyed running into him over the years. He was always so friendly and wanted to know how things were going. We said hi to each other in passing at broomball a couple weeks ago and he made sure to acknowledge and say "how are you?" to my 5 year old daughter. He was a wonderful person and had a very positive impact on our tightly knit community. I have seen the impact this has had on so many of his friends, he is surely loved by so many. More people should be like Derek. In this extremely hard time don't forget that you raised one of the good ones. Be proud.

Paul and LeAnn, I cried while reading Derek’s obituary, and thought about how lucky you were to have him for 33 years, and how lucky he was to have you. I can only imagine what a wonderful, loving family he and Whitney were proud to grow up in with the two of you as parents. Derek sounds like he was a special, special man. What's crazy about when someone passes is that no one realizes how far they really branched out and how the most random people are totally affected by it. Last winter I did an internship in Cambodia for 6 weeks before studying abroad in Shanghai for 3 and a half months. I went to Cambodia knowing no one and having never traveled alone. I complained to a friend that I didn't know how I was going to make friends while in Cambodia in a hostel, and he told me that someone would somehow come along. On my first day in Cambodia, I ate breakfast alone until Derek came up to me and introduced himself. He invited me to go to the killing fields and the S21 museum with him and I said yes. We ended up becoming such great friends after that day and the rest is history to us. During his trip to Cambodia, he actually switched around some of his dates so that he could spend some more time with me in Phnom Penh. I liked Derek right away. He made me laugh, he told amazing stories, he was passionate, he was smart, and he was such a good listener. Derek was the first friend I made in my 5-month journey, and even though I only knew him for two weeks, I never forgot the great times we had together. Derek left a note for me in the journal I kept and I will treasure that note forever. I am truly saddened by the loss of my good friend. He was such a good person and had so much love to give to everyone around him. My deepest condolences to the Hanssen family, he was very special.

LeAnn, Paul and Whitney I am so very sorry to hear of Derek's passing. Such a handsome thoughtful young man. I had the pleasure of speaking with Derek last summer at a wedding reception. He was so kind and thoughtful. He and my 87 year old father talked for well over an hour. My dad and I really enjoyed him telling stories of his travels and what he was doing in life these days. He was part of a very special tight knit group of friends throughout his school years and those bonds continued on. He will be truly missed by all. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
