Obituary of Joan C. (Mertz) Severin

Joan C. (Mertz) Severin, age 88, of Superior died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Solvay Hospice House, in Duluth.

She was born August 17, 1930 in Superior, the daughter of the late Clarence Mertz and Inez Wells. Joan married Orville A. Severin and they raised five children.

She was a CNA for 20 years at Chaffeys Nursing Home in Superior and enjoyed many summers at their lake cabin in Wascott, WI.

Joan is preceded in death by her husband; son, David; parents; brother, Clarence Mertz, Jr; sisters, Carol Johansen and Diane Nelson.

She is survived by her children, Judy Severin, Linda (Donald) Dembroski, Richard, all of Superior, Jeffrey (Debbie) Severin of TX and daughter-in-law, Jackie Severin of MI; grandchildren, Shelley Blaylock, Steven Upthegrove, Jason Upthegrove, Donald Dembroski, Casey Dembroski, Desiree Severin, Dawn Severin, Kris Severin, Jeremy Severin, Holly Severin and Kevin Severin; along with several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was also survived by her brother, Kenneth (Shirley) Mertz and sister, Irene (Brad) Hillstrom-Haugen; and sister-in-law, Carol Hicks.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Essentia Health, Superior Rehabilitation Center, Superior, Chris Jensen and Solvay Hospice House for their excellent care.

Honoring Joan's request, there will be a private family burial later this summer.
