Obituary of Oliver Hartzell Shockley, Jr.

Oliver Hartzell Shockley Jr.,92, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Monday December 3rd at home, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.

He was born on April 14th, 1926 in Salisbury, Maryland to Alice (Shores) and Oliver Hartzell Shockley Sr.

While serving in the Air Force in London, England, he met and married the love of his life, Mary Brigid Poland. After completing his career in the Air Force, he worked for Piggly Wiggly as a meat cutter, and at the DECC as an engineer. Oliver, "Shock," was an avid bowler and recognized by both the American Bowling Congress and the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame. A longtime golfer at Lester Golf Course, he shot an 80, which was a score that bettered his age by five strokes. He also had 5 holes- in -one to his credit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, and son Glenn.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary; son Mark of North Dakota; Daughter Jane (Ray), of Minneapolis; Grandchildren, Scott (Maranda), Travis, Jordan, Connor and Audrey; great grandchildren Anna and Anthony; and daughter-in-law Denise (Jim).

A private service will be held in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Cancer Society.
