Obituary of Joyce Beverly Smith

Joyce Beverly Smith, 86 of Duluth passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center. Joyce was born in Duluth on February 10, 1932, to Carl and Freida (Carlson) Peterson. Joyce married Robert "Bob" Smith on November 29, 1952. They enjoyed many years of camping and fishing together, and gardening at their home on Jerry Road. Joyce had a soft heart for animals, especially dogs. She had several dogs over the years and when it was no longer possible to have her own, she enjoyed visits from the neighbor dog (Latti).

Following her retirement from St. Louis County, Joyce and her constant companion, her sister Do (Delores), kept busy with their involvement in community organizations including Homesteaders, Lakewood American Legion Auxiliary, Rice Lake 55 Club and Nu-Agers, as well as volunteering at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay. She also enjoyed an occasional evening out for dinner and playing pull tabs with her niece Carol and husband John.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents Carl and Freida; brothers Don and George; sister Do, Barb and Cookie; nephews David and George; and special friend Darrell Rajavuori. She is survived by her sister Judy Gilbertson of Duluth, and many nieces, nephews and their children, and friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018, from 10 until noon at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Avenue, Duluth.
