Mary Feiring

Obituary of Mary Jane Feiring

In the early morning hours of Friday, November 30, 2018, surrounded by her loving family, Mary Jane Feiring got her birthday wish and left this earth to join God and her beloved husband Bob.

Mary was born in Duluth on November 26, 1919 to Erik Abel and Anna Person, who emigrated here from Sweden. She graduated from Duluth Central in 1937. On July 15, 1939, Mary was married to the love of her life, Robert Feiring. This marriage lasted over 71 years and Bob and Mary spent much of it singing to each other. Their favorite song was "Let Me Call You Sweetheart".

Bob and Mary spent most of their married life in their home in Woodland for over 50 years. They loved to play golf and Mary played volleyball for years, continuing her volleyball reunions until last year. Mary was also a Girl Scout leader when her older daughters were young. She was active in her church- Concordia Lutheran- and delivered sermon tapes, participated in Bible study, and cooked at church camp, as well as many other roles.

Mary worked at Cobb School as a cook for 13 years. She loved to cook and her dishes that were famous with family and friends included Swedish pancakes, rye bread, sylta and Italian Spaghetti.

After retirement, Mary and Bob spent 22 years wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona where they made many friends. She enjoyed hiking in the mountains, golf, swimming, and playing cards in the warm Arizona winters.

Mary and Bob moved to Mount Royal Pines III in December of 2009 where they received loving help throughout their 90s. After Bob's death on November 15, 2010, Mary continued to live there, playing bridge, 500, cribbage, and Bingo, watching Wheel of Fortune, playing chair volleyball and participating in lots of social activities. Mary spent her final days at Solvay Hospice House, "the best place I ever stayed".

Mary was preceded in death by her parent; her brothers, Edward and Richard, her sisters Dagmar, Grace, and Alice; her husband, Bob; her daughter, Barbara Gebelein- Feiring; and her grandson, Lon Mehrman.

She is survived by her children, Carol Feiring, Bruce Feiring, Debra (Bill) Roach and Mark (Julie) Feiring; as well as her grandchildren, Terry Ross, Richard Mehrman, Sherry Mehrman, Penny Derauf, Dean Slotness, Erik Slotness, Michael Feiring and Robert Feiring. Mary is also survived by ten great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; as well as her sister, Marjorie, son-in-law, Klem Gebelein; and many dear friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Long for his compassionate care of our mom, Mount Royal Pines III staff, especially Kathy, for their amazing ability to meet the needs of all of their residents on a daily basis and to the Solvay Hospice staff for their gentle and expert final care.

Mary's memorial service will be held on Friday, December 7 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 2501 Woodland Avenue, Duluth. Visitation will begin at 10:00 with the service to follow at 11:00. Her request is that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Concordia Lutheran Church.
