Obituary of Alan Edward Mettner
Alan passed away October 22, 2018. He was born October 16, 1926 to Carl and Gladys (Ball) Mettner. Alan attended Duluth Central High School through the 11th grade to join the Army in 1944, World War II. He served in the Philippines Liberation.
Alan married Elizabeth Carlson on June 18th, 1949 and they had three children. He was employed by Railway Express Agency, Plaza Piggly Wiggly Grocery, Sullivan Oil Co., Dan Leksell Accounting. In 1984 he started his own business, Mettner Accounting, until his retirement in 2010. He was a charter member of the former Lakeside Baptist Church and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church. Alan served on the Duluth Transit Authority Board for twelve years. He was a volunteer at Chris Jensen Health & Rehab. His hobbies included pastel painting, carving wooden birds, gardening and scroll sawing. Alan enjoyed the Island Lake Cabin which he and his family built.
Alan is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Keith Carl Mettner.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, sons, Daniel (Gail Voss), Thomas (Denise) and daughter Brenda Eng; grandchildren, Sarah Jessico, Amanda Eng, Mindy Mettner, Samantha Mettner, Matthew (Stacey) Richards and four great grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff at Edgewood Vista Memory Care for their support of Alan. Donations appreciated to Alzheimer's Association or Emmanuel Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1505 Eklund Ave., Duluth, with a visitation from 12:00-1:00 pm.
