Obituary of Eugene Joseph Hoy

Eugene (Gene) Joseph Hoy, age 89, of Apple Valley, MN passed away peacefully on October 21, 2018. Gene born on May 4th, 1929 to Eugene and Elizabeth Hoy in Minneapolis, MN. He spent his youth working odd jobs and attended St. Thomas Military Academy where he competed on the varsity baseball and boxing. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country proudly for 2 years and fought in the Korean War. When he returned home, he attended and graduated from the Minnesota School of Business. On February 4th, 1956 Gene married Nancy Corbett. Gene started his real estate business, Vikings Properties, in Apple Valley, MN where he was very successful and sold thousands of homes for many years to an area that was just building up. After retiring from the real estate business, he became a door greeter at Walmart, where many families in the community he loved remembered him and recognized him for the first sale or their home. Gene had very strong Christian beliefs and taught his family the value of hard work by the example he set. He was a strong staple of the community by being one of the first Volunteer Apple Valley Fire Fighters, member of the Knights of the Columbus, Rang the Bell for the Salvation Army, and volunteered his time through the church, including Loaves and Fishes. Gene will be greatly missed by so many friends and family. Survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Nancy, and children, Pat (Cathy) Hoy, Jerry Hoy, Colleen Olson, Debbie (Carol) Hoy, Ann Marie (Mark) Knutson, and Renee (Mitch) Johnson, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sisters, Marie Merrigan, Kathleen Benson, Margie McCurdy, and a brother, Tom Hoy. Preceding him in death are his parents, Eugene and Elizabeth Hoy: parents in law, Pat and Clara Corbett; sister, Patricia Orth, and brother, Hugh Hoy. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 am at Church of the Risen Savior in Burnsville, MN on Friday, October 26th with visitation from 10:00-11:00 am before the burial mass. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, October 29th at 10:45 am.
