Marc Brown

Obituary of Marc Brown

Marc Brown, born July 1, 1942 in Montevideo MN, died October 17, at Little Hospice in Edina, of bile duct cancer. He did not "battle" or "struggle" with cancer. It was more of a dance. Preceded in death by billions of people, notably his parents Lennard and B Brown and infant sister Jean. Survived by his wife, best friend and alter ego Cathy; daughter Lindsey and son Zak (Krishna) and granddaughters Zea and Elie; sister Andrea (Paul) Olson and brother Tom (Jan) and 6 nieces and nephews. A 1964 graduate of Macalester College, where he spotted Cathy on his first day and felt a glimmer. He joined the Green Giant Co., later purchased by the Pillsbury Co., and spent 30 years there. One highlight of those years was being assigned to manage Pillsbury volunteers working on several Habitat for Humanity houses sponsored by Pillsbury, experience that later led to semi-retirement work for a timber frame home builder, and later rehabbing homes. Marc's life was altered in 1956 when, as a 14-year-old Boy Scout, he went on a canoe trip in the northern Minnesota lake country wilderness, now federally protected as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. A dream that began then was fulfilled in 1979 when he and Cathy bought land near Ely MN, one portage away from the BWCAW. A cabin they began building there in 1985, provided Marc with a beloved "project" for many years and has been a sanctuary for him and the family ever since. A memorial service will be held at Mayflower Church UCC at 106 E. Diamond Lake Road, Minneapolis, at 11 am November 3. A lunch reception will follow. Private interment. Memorials to Mayflower Church Foundation, Mayflower Church Music Ministry, Fairview Hospice Services, Little Hospice, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity or Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative.
