Obituary of Maryanne C. Norton
Maryanne Chadwick Norton, of Duluth, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at her home. She was born September 13, 1934 in Minneapolis, the daughter of John Dean and Ruth (Hein) Chadwick. She was a graduate of Southwest High School in Minneapolis, and later of the University of Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English, and a Master's degree in Library Science. She and Daniel Norton married after meeting in graduate school at the University of Minnesota.
Maryanne was very active as a librarian, and an architectural historian. In both Wausau, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota, she was influential in historic preservation, and helped to protect many significant structures, including the Milwaukee Road Depot in Wausau, and the Duluth Armory. She was also an author/co-author of numerous books and a long-time volunteer at the Duluth Public Library. She and Dan enjoyed time at their cabin on Hungry Jack Lake on the Gunflint Trail.
Maryanne is survived by her husband, Dan, son and daughter-in-law, John and Ann Norton, step-grandchildren Zoe and Jack, and sister Deanne Lentz. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Chadwick.
A celebration of Maryanne's life will be held Monday, October 15, 2018 from 5-8pm, tribute at 6pm, at Glensheen Mansion in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Duluth Library Foundation or the Gunflint Trail Historical Society.
