William Sutton

Obituary of William Sutton

Bill passed away on January 16, 2018. Bill was born to William and Marjorie (Johnsen) Sutton on July 24, 1937. He lived his entire life in Woodland, never getting very far off Owatonna Street. Until recently, neighbors saw him walking one of his beloved Airedales around the block daily. He was married to Cheryl (Maki) Sutton on October 22, 1966, and they recently celebrated their 51st anniversary. Bill graduated from Duluth Central (1956), worked as a pipefitter/welder for Local 11, and retired in 1999 from Comfort Systems. He served in the Army National Guard and the 148th Air National Guard. He loved the outdoors and spent as much time at the deer shack at Chris Lake as he could. Any day at the deer shack was a good day. Hunting was a passion for him, and he went on several bow hunting trips with friends to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. He was a past president of the Duluth Archery Club. He was always active outdoors; snowmobiling, riding his ATV or the motorcycle he bought as a retirement present for himself, stopping only at age 75. He and Cheryl loved to travel to the western states and the Canadian Rockies. Trips to Mexico and the Caribbean were also memorable. He is survived by his wife Cheryl; son, Erik; niece, Leah (Scott) Spicer, Saginaw, MN; nephew, Dean (Cleora) Anderson, El Paso, TX; and brother-in-law, Jon (Carla) Maki, Lexington, KY; and numerous cousins and friends. At Bill's request there will be no services, but he would want everyone to raise a glass to toast his memory, and to go hunting whenever you get the chance. If you choose, memorials may be sent to: Airedale Terrier Rescue, 1123 Vesper Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, or Hartley Nature Center, 3001 Woodland Ave., Duluth, MN 55803. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota.
