Obituary of Margery Gladys Scheie

Scheie, Margery Gladys Ostrom Dec. 2, 1930 - Feb. 10, 2018 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend and citizen, went to her heavenly rest on February 10, 2018. Raised in Chicago in the Depression, Marge gained a love of landscaping and home decorating from her father and a joy in the wider world of travel and culture from her mother. She became the first in her family to attend college. At St. Olaf College, working at the college radio station, she met the love of her life, a skinny pastor's son from small-town Iowa, Dave Scheie. They went on to share 65 years of warm, loving marriage. A devoted at-home mother and homemaker, Marge raised four children. Through words and example, she encouraged her children to be kind, curious, thrifty, and fair. She was active in bridge clubs, book clubs, music groups and her church. She also served in public life. As a park board member in Marion, IA, she led her town to set aside green spaces for parks amid burgeoning development. Later, elected to the Linn-Mar School Board, she was a champion for academic enrichment and arts programs. In her 40s, Marge worked part-time for the US Census Bureau, interviewing Iowans from all walks of life. She also took up biking and skiing with friends. She and Dave became worldwide travelers. She especially enjoyed escaping to Florida during the winter cold. Marge suffered from memory loss starting in her 60s, but remained physically vigorous until her last months. She and Dave moved to the Minneapolis area in 2007 to be closer to family, after 48 years in Cedar Rapids, IA. Her family misses her dearly. She is survived by her husband, Dave; daughter Maggie Scheie-Lurie (David Lurie) of Takoma Park, MD; sons David (Lee Johnson-Scheie), Peter (Pam Rykken-Scheie), daughter Jenny Sigsbee (Will Sigsbee), brother Don Ostrom (Florence), and grandchildren Elsa, Jesse, Marisa, Jill, Michael, Joel and Alec, all in the Minneapolis area. A celebration of her life will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2315 Chicago Avenue, Minneapolis, on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2:00 p.m.
