Obituary of Michael Marcus Sowl

Michael Marcus Sowl (74), beloved by family and friends, died March 31, 2018, in Duluth, MN. Michael was born in Fosston, MN in 1943 to Astrid and Alfred Sowl. He was the fourth of eight children. After graduating from Denfeld High School he attended UMD and joined the Air Force. He completed his studies at the Defense Language School at the Presidio of Monterey. He then served in Air Force Intelligence in South Korea. He later moved to Monterey, CA. He moved back to Duluth in the 1970s where he painted houses, wrote poetry, and generally enjoyed life. Michael had a distinct, gravelly voice and always saw the best in everyone. He was curious and kind, gentle and generous; to him the world was "beautiful". He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents Astrid and Alfred Sowl, brothers, Geoffrey and Ethan, sisters Beverly, Carolyn (Sue), and Shari. He is survived by his brothers Fred (Amy) Sowl and C. Patrick (Kathy) Sowl, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Per Michael's instructions no formal services will be held. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held in the near future.
