Obituary of Robert W. Jones

Robert W. Jones, age 87, lifelong resident of Midway Township and the Duluth area, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, December 30, 2014. He was born January 13, 1927 in Duluth to Lincoln and Gertrude Jones and attended Morgan Park Schools. Bob began working for D.M. & I.R. and then U.S. Steel before serving in the U.S. Army. After the service he returned to U.S. Steel and retired when they closed in the 1970’s, after 38 years of service. On January 29, 1949, Bob married Agnes Blazevic. Bob and Agnes owned and operated the Jones’ Greenhouse for over 30 years. He was a union steward for Local #1028 and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Bob was a pilot and rebuilt three airplanes. He was known as “Grandview Bob” or “Bob from near Duluth” and called the Lew Latto radio talk show regularly. Bob had his own saw mill and had a passion for woodworking. Bob enjoyed playing cards, fishing with his sons and grandkids on Isle Royale, and dancing. He was still chopping and splitting his own fire wood. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Eugene. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Agnes; children, Eugene (Debbie Neumann) of Duluth, Gerry (Diane) of Proctor, Kathleen (Ralph) Isaacson of Iron, Thomas (Gleng) of the Philippines and Stephanie (Russell) Chapin of Cloquet; 17 grandchildren; 30 greatgrandchildren; two greatgreatgrandchildren; siblings, Richard (Roseann) of KS, David (Cora) of Eveleth, Rita (Myron) Ellingson of Owatonna and Ramon (Jeanette) of CA: many other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the homecare nurses of Interim Health Care for their patience, care and kindness. Gathering of family and friends from 9am until the 11am Memorial Mass Saturday, January 3rd at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 610 99th Ave. West. Arrangements entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota, 218-624-5200.
