Obituary of Ruth Eleanor Roberts

Ruth Eleanor Roberts, 90, of Duluth, MN, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 16, 2015, while at the Golden Living Center - Linden, Stillwater, MN. Ruth was born on May 2, 1924 in Milwaukee, WI to Howard and Blanch (Brock) Marsen. She was the oldest of 7 children. She graduated from high school and on October 1, 1941, married Donald Roberts. From 1949-1953 they opened, owned and operated the “Candy Corner” in Duluth, and from 1953 to 1973 they moved the business up one block and renamed it the “Candy Bar”. Ruth graduated from the Wilton School of Cake Decorating and started a catering business. Her faith was strong and she was very active in her church, First Presbyterian Church, Duluth. She was involved in many activities including circle, Bible studies, the prayer chain, and everything in the kitchen. She was also a dedicated visitor to those in the hospital, nursing homes and the homebound. After she retired, if Ruth wasn’t at home, it was a good bet she could be found at church. Ruth and Don spent several years wintering in Fort Myers, Florida. In 1984 they moved to Ft. Myers and summered in Duluth. They always drove back and forth, never flew. They also traveled all over the United States visiting many landmarks, family and friends. They returned to Duluth in 2002 to be closer to family. She was an avid stamp and coin collector and belonged to those clubs in both Ft. Meyers and Duluth. Ruth was also very involved with the American Cancer Society in Fort Myers. Family was very important to Ruth. She was a loving wife, the best mom, a wonderful mother-in-law, an amazing grandmother, a supportive great grandmother, and a true friend. She will always be remembered. Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Anne Roberts; grandchildren, Susan (Allen) Powers, Deborah Roberts, David (Angie) Roberts, and Kathryn Dahlheimer; great grandchildren, Aimee and Michelle Powers; Tyler Vechinski, Allie and Kyle Roberts; and Jessica and Brendan Maki. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents, Howard and Blanch Marsen; brothers and sisters, Don, Sally, Charlotte, Richard, Robert and David. A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Duluth on May 2, 2015 at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour before. Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 300 E 2nd Street, Duluth, MN. Arrangements are with the Cremation Society of Minnesota.
