Obituary of Martha Marie Johnson
Martha Marie Johnson, 95, of Duluth, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2015 in St. Luke's Hospital.
Martha was born in Duluth, to Charles and Lydia Abrahamson on April 14, 1920.
She grew up on a small dairy farm on the Abrahamson Road in Hermantown. During the depression her father used to take the back seat out of the Hudson, fill it with bags of potatoes and the kids would sell them door to door. She graduated from Proctor High School in 1938. She started waitressing just down the Miller Trunk Highway at Benson's Caf, where she would meet her future husband. Martha married Justa Johnson on Nov. 14, 1941 and celebrated 65 years of marriage before his passing in 2006.
In her younger years she taught Sunday school and was a den mother while her children were in scouting. Later on she enjoyed working at the Glass Block Store downtown and at the mall. She made lifetime special friends while playing in the same bridge club for over 50 years. Martha and Justa liked to take short trips in the Midwest in retirement.
Some of her hobbies included gardening, crossword puzzles and baking; she made mouth-watering wild rice bread.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Ileen Joriman, Margaret Medes and brother Hilding Abrahamson.
Martha is survived by sons Dennis and Dale (Kathie) and nieces and nephews.
