My sincere condolences go out to Philip's family on this 1-year anniversary of his passing. I met Philip in college and we dated for 5 years, in the '80s. We hadn't been in touch in ages, but several weeks ago I was reminded of him, and tried to locate him online. With much shock and sadness, I found the news of his passing here.
I have so many great memories of my time with Philip. He had such a creative and adventurous spirit. His band, The Swabs, was a vibrant part of the Minneapolis Music scene at that time. He influenced my life in ways I am still grateful for all these years later. I am happy to hear that he found a meaningful way to help others with his work, and believe he was very good at it. His spirit and his love will live always in our hearts.

~ Phillip Johnson ~
Gentle soul. Sweet heart. Dear friend.
Sadly we lost our young friend on April 11, 2020. He had suffered a long health battle, but that did not stop his daily optimism, his kindness towards others and his caring personality. He was inquisitive and inclusive. He had a deep Catholic faith that reassured him. His witty humor brought smiles to all. He had been well-suited for his career as counselor for those struggling with mental illness.
Oh, and his candy of choice was Skittles.
Despite the pain he endured, he was always the first to ask…”How are you doing today?” Phillip asked a lot of life questions. He felt those were more important than the answers.
We shall miss our dear friend.

I knew Philip for many years through his role at ACP. He was always kind and had the most interesting ways of looking at situations. Even in the midst of his own struggle, he reached out to ACP to check in. He was a character and will be missed!

We are so sad about Phil’s death.
His diagnosis was alarming. His family worked hard to keep him safe and comfortable through terrible times.
Phil was always one of our favorite people. To us, he seemed to carry a certain lightness around him. His conversation often seemed inspired, and inspiring. He could bring us along on his mental leaps. We never seemed to have enough time to talk.
Observing him with others, he was calming, without judgment but always with genuine interest.
His lifelong education and professional advancement made us proud. His death will not diminish our care for him.
Most sincere condolences – Aunt Katherine and Jim Lee

A TRIBUTE TO PHILIP
Your gentle face and patient smile with
sadness we recall,
you had a kindly word for each
and died beloved by all.
The voice is mute and stilled the heart,
that loved us well and true.
Ah, bitter was the trial to part
from one so good as you.
You are not forgotten, loved one,
nor will you ever be.
As long as life and memory last
we will remember thee.
We miss you now, our hearts are sore,
as time goes by we miss you more.
Your loving smile, your gentle face
no one can fill your vacant place.

Phil was a loving and kind soul, and an optimist who would point out the best in people. He was a brilliant, creative mind who enjoyed MENSA puzzles as much as any old Monty Python episode! A joy to be around, “Willip” brought a unique and insightful perspective in conversations about any topic; music, politics, science, sports, beer :) We take some solace that he is in a better place free of pain and no longer having to battle against cancer. He is missed by all of us who loved him.

Phil was a great brother and kind man. He suffered so much but never complained as he took his illness head on with continual hope of getting better. I referred to him as “the champ” to his caregivers because he was a fighter with a perennial smile on his face. He never once complained about his illness. Our family was fortunate to enjoy some great moments with Phil at the lake and in FL over time, and will move forward with heavy hearts along with those wonderful memories.
