My Dear Jan, You gave your life to help indigent people who had no alternatives; you gave them dignity, honor, second chances and hope for the future. I only learned today that we can no longer talk by phone, laugh hard, sometimes cry, and always marvel at your grandchildren, sons, and those beautiful flowers you sent me pictures of. For more than 25 years our friendship was strong, our love of the people we served and shared, and our distinct hope for the future of the "people of the projects" our priority. God gave you such extraordinary intellect, compassion, integrity and the will to always do the "right thing". My heart, too, is broken as I convey my everlasting love to your faithful sons and their families; they were always your lifeline. If God gave out tickets to heaven, you certainly received one. It is difficult for me to envision the loss your sons and grandchildren must feel. Yet, they know your kindness, display of love, wonder of nature and the art of catching a fish you could fry for dinner. I will never forget our collaborative hard work, the joy of success, and the table we used to seek remedies to problems over our 25 years of work together. God shall keep you busy because you are one of his angels who lived to make our world a better place. Thank you for everything! I will always love you. Jan was an amazing woman. The photographs she posted of flowers in her garden were so beautiful. I will always remember our trip to Door County WI and Washington Island to find her roots.

Beloved "Auntie" Jan. She was the rock. One of the coolest women I ever knew. Never minced words, told you the truth in love, even if it hurt. The only person who showed me love & excitement for a new baby coming into the world, when I was unmarried and told her I was pregnant in 1987. Her home was always open & full of love & fun & great food & lively conversation. I will miss her and never forget her. The Hughes sisters are together again...
I am heartbroken for you all & your families, Robben, Galen, Marci, Ben, Kenny, & Clayton.

Jan was a treasured member of the Master Gardener community at St. Joseph's Home for Children. The pollinator garden and the addition of okra to the vegetable beds are testaments to her influence! We will all miss her gentle ways and ready smile but know that her spirit lives on every time a butterfly floats through the gardens.
