We just learned today of the passing of Dave. Our sympathies to Julie and Colin and Aaron and extended family. Our prayer is that you will experience the comfort of God during this time. David was a friend that wanted the best for the young boys on the teams he coached. He indeed had an intense competitive spirit which I appreciated. What was refreshing about Dave is that he did not hide that but spoke what was on his mind and you knew what he was thinking. For many years I had the privilege of coaching along side Dave in baseball, and in basketball we got to coach teams that played each other. We experienced many championships in baseball and whether it was a game or a practice, everyone loved being there and playing. Dave made it fun. While he may have given off a tough and competitive persona, he had a soft side that I had a chance to observe. He loved his boys and invested hours of time with them. However, he also cared about the other boys on the team and gave words of affirmation and encouragement. As I reflect over the years of coaching, I think every player on one of his teams was glad to have his as a coach and there was a strong team unity that was built with each team he coached. The memories of hot summer days standing next to Dave in the dugout watching the team make plays and a few errors will always be a cherished memory for me. We experienced all of the emotions of a coach with a team including the thrill of a double play made with bases loaded and up by one run to win a game, or the frustration of strike 3 in the 7th inning when the tying run was at third base. However, victories or defeats are not where Dave remained. He was looking forward to the next challenge and determined that the team would rise to the occasion and be better than the last game. He also did not let players rest on their past accomplishments. He expected each player to contribute and put forth the best they had with a commitment to the team first. You will be missed Dave, but your influence as a coaching mentor of players will live on with them for a lifetime.
