Obituary of Penny Lou Spencer

Beloved wife, mother, grandma, friend, sponsor. You touched our hearts like no other and we shall not be the same for knowing you. Rest now thou good and faithful trusted servant. The lives you changed will never forget the love you offered.

Penny Spencer, age 62 of Minneapolis, passed into her new life on February 2, 2019.  After years of fighting the complications of diabetes, she let go of this life at home surrounded by the love and encouragement of her immediate family.

Born to Lucille Wanzer and James Fink at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. She was their oldest daughter. She graduated from Herbert Hoover High school in Toledo, Iowa, in 1973.  She was a resourceful single mother for many years, going to school until she started her career at Catholic Eldercare. She loved to knit and crochet and was a founding member of the Midwest Machine Knitters Collaborative. And she collected glass and ceramic shoes.

In the fall of 1988, Penny’s life changed dramatically, she became a member of Narcotics Anonymous and stayed in recovery from active addiction for over 30 years.  She served long hours as the office manager of the Upper Midwest Service Office of Narcotics Anonymous from 1990 to 2003 helping countless suffering addicts find a new way of life in NA.

Penny will be remembered for her smile, her sense of humor and profound gratitude for a second chance at a life she never imagined possible. She made the best of every day she lived.

Penny is survived by her husband Jeff, her daughter Jessica, her granddaughter Brianna, her two dogs Ellie and Ashley, also her mother, Lucille Wanzer her sisters, Candy Larson, Debbie Rowe, her brother Scott Wanzer and her cousin Paula Foreman Gray.  She is preceded in death by her father, James Fink.
