Obituary of Bubzie Bisson

Malcolm Lewis Bisson, lovingly known as Bubzie, age 74. Member of the White Earth Nation and proud descendant of Mazaadidi & Pazaheyawin, Santee Dakota. Born September 24, 1944 to Opal and Melvin Bisson Sr, he was given the Dakota name "Hepan".

On February 10, 2019, Malcolm began his spirit journey after a prolonged illness. Creator has reunited him with his parents, Melvin & Opal and brothers, Marty & Gordy.

Malcolm is survived by his brother Tony Bisson (Margaret), nieces Carrie Bisson, Naomi Helm, Colleen Pitleck (Tom), Heather Bisson-Dale (Mike), Renee Lunemann, Breanna Bisson, Abbey Dobratz (Jeremy), Caitlin Helm and Cayden Bisson-Dale; nephews Joey Lunemann and Matthew Bisson-Dale; grand niece Winona Bisson and grand nephew Odin Dobratz. Malcolm is also survived by his “sister” Darlene Armstrong and many other extended family members.

Malcolm was raised in South Minneapolis. After graduating from South High School he served in the US Navy. In the 70’s and 80’s he became a stylist & owner of salons in Wayzata & Minneapolis. Malcolm graduated from the University of Minnesota and enjoyed the adventure and travel of a Semester at Sea.

Malcolm became a tenacious advocate for veterans, the disabled, people of color and the LGTBQ community. He was involved in programs at the MAIC and enjoyed the congregate dining fellowship.

He was often found networking with city, county, state, or national public officials. Due to his efforts, disabled veterans are able to ride Metro Transit for free with their ID.

Malcolm's generosity and kindness often led him to open his home to those needing to get back on their feet or going through a rough time in their lives. "That's our culture." he'd say, "We are supposed to help one another."

We’ll miss his quick wit, sense of humor and contagious laugh.

A special thanks to the VA hospital and Providence Place staffs for caring for him.

A celebration of Malcolm’s life will be held on Friday, February 22nd, 10:30 am at Minneapolis American Indian Center 1530 E Franklin Ave. Internment with honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery 12:45 pm lane #4.
