Randolph "Randy" Perry Roen Obituary

Randolph “Randy” Perry Roen, 86, died Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota, with his family by his side.

Randy was born July 21, 1939, in Duluth to Perry and Helen Roen. He graduated from Esko High School in 1957, earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Minnesota and became a mechanical engineer at 3M, where he spent his entire professional career. Randy was also an enlisted United States Marine, honorably discharged in October 1963.

Randy married Christine Halverson of Soudan, Minnesota, on March 18, 1967, and the couple lived in the country just south of Afton, Minnesota, until retirement. They then moved to the Balsam Township area of Itasca County, in Minnesota.

The couple has two children: Deanna and Erick, and the family enjoyed annual canoe trips into the BWCAW for many years. Randy was a fisherman and hunter and loved to regale his family with tales of “losing the big one,” freezing in a duck blind, and trudging through snow past his knees to haul his prize deer out of the woods. He loved dogs and dogs loved him. Multi-talented, he was a woodworker, and in the last few years he built 65 Adirondack chairs for his daughter and son-in-law’s Wisconsin resort. About the only thing he couldn’t do, was keep his early 1970’s Melroe 610 Bobcat running smoothly.

Randy is survived by his wife Christine, and children, Deanna (Michael) Hessling, and Erick (Frances) Roen; three grandsons, Gareth Shepherd, Michael Shepherd and Christian Roen; siblings, sister Jen Mott; brothers, Peter (Paula) Roen, Jon Roen, and Richard (Sherry) Roen, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Perry and Helen Roen of Esko, Minnesota, and brother Dan Roen.
