Michael Allen Brenegan

It is with deep and profound sadness that we share that Mike passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at the age of 81, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, accomplishments, and the love and admiration of family and friends. Mike was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandpa; a beloved son and big brother; a special brother-in-law; a favorite father-in-law; an uncle, cousin, and cherished friend.

Mike was born on July 23, 1944, to Allen and Betty Brenegan, the oldest of their three children. He grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin, attended local schools, and made many friends, some of whom remained among his closest friends throughout his entire life.

As a young teenager, Mike channeled his energy and outgoing personality into music and became a talented drummer. Along with three buddies, he formed a rock 'n' roll band called The Sparklettes. Today they would be known as a garage band, but back then practices were held in his parents' basement, where his little sister and the neighborhood girls gathered excitedly on the stairs, swooning over every song.    

The Sparklettes played sock hop dances at Teenarena, a popular local music venue in LaCrosse. As the lyric goes, "If there's a rock 'n' roll heaven, you know they've got a heck of a drummer."

With Mike's impeccable rhythm, coordination, and technique, he was the backbone of the band. Mike kept his 1960s drum set throughout his life. If you were lucky, you could catch him playing and locked into a solid groove.

After graduating from Central High School in 1962, Mike and a friend headed to Aspen, Colorado, to ski and work on the mountains. Fulfilling this dream sparked another adventure, and soon he was on the road to Mexico, a country not visited by many Midwesterners at that time. When the beaches, sunshine, and siestas had satisfied his wanderlust, Mike enrolled at Santa Barbara City College in California in 1964 and graduated from its two-year program in 1966. It wasn't long before his yearning for adventure resurfaced, and he was on his way to Petersburg, Alaska.    

Mike spent the summer of 1966 as a crew member aboard a large commercial salmon fishing boat, an experience that helped shape his strong work ethic and resilience. It was only natural that he felt comfortable on the water after spending many fun-filled summers fishing the Mississippi River from his family's boat and, years later, cruising the St. Croix on his own boat.

His previous experience helped, but commercial fishing in Alaska meant dangerous, fast-paced work, long hours, rough seas, and cold, remote conditions. The challenges only made him want more, and he returned the following summer. It was part of who he was, and he loved it.

Following through on his plans, Mike enrolled at Arizona State University to start in the fall of 1966. During a visit home after leaving Alaska, he reached out to Gail Homan, having had a crush on her since high school. He quickly realized it was much more than a crush and asked Gail to move to Arizona so they could be together. She found a teaching position while Mike continued his education.

Their relationship proved lasting, and on December 30, 1967, with snow falling outside, candlelight glowing inside, and loved ones gathered around them, Mike and Gail were married. Together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage.

When summer arrived, the newlyweds packed for Alaska. Along with their beloved Siamese cat, Coco, they spent several months working in the fishing industry. Mike returned to the boat while Gail, the trooper she is, tried working one day in a fish processing plant skinning fish. You can ask her about that job!

While attending Arizona State, Mike was accepted into the US Army Officer Candidate School (OCS) program which allowed him to complete his degree before beginning active duty. He graduated from Arizona State University in May 1969 with degrees in Marketing and Finance.

A month after graduation, Mike was sworn into the United States Army and proudly served his country with the same sense of duty that guided every chapter of his life. His training included Fort Dix, Fort Leonard Wood, Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, and Quartermaster training in Petersburg, Virginia.    

In 1970, Mike was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He later served in St. Louis, specializing in equipment and aviation command with a focus on helicopter procurement. Following a reduction in force in 1972, Mike left active duty but joined the Army Reserve in 1975, serving with honor and distinction until 1981. Rising to the rank of Captain, Mike demonstrated the leadership, dedication, and integrity that defined his life. As a proud veteran, he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Returning to their Midwestern roots, Mike and Gail settled in the Twin Cities in 1972, started a family, and Mike began his sales and marketing career with Reynolds and Reynolds, followed by Control Data. When Memorex came calling, he accepted the opportunity to sell computer products.

Throughout his career, Mike was continually recognized for his impressive sales achievements. His success was built on honesty, hard work, and his remarkable ability to build genuine relationships with clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. Mike had a gift for making people feel appreciated and valued.

After a successful career spanning many years, including his final five years with Global Marketing, Mike retired, leaving behind an inspiring legacy as a respected colleague, leader, mentor, and friend.

Mike built a life centered on family, friendship, loyalty, hard work, and the pursuits he loved most. Many years ago, at the urging of his brother Steve, he traded his boat for golf clubs and developed a passion for both the game and the friendships it fostered. He enjoyed playing courses in Arizona, Florida, and throughout Minnesota, proudly completing more than 80 rounds of golf during his final year.

One of Mike's favorite traditions was attending the Masters Tournament with his brother Steve and brothers-in-law Bob and Roger. Beginning in 1997, those trips became a "slice of heaven" for the foursome. Now Mike and Steve walk Heaven's fairways together once again.

Through both work and personal travel, Mike and Gail explored the world together, visiting Hawaii, London, Paris, Cairo, Maastricht, Amsterdam, and throughout Italy. Though they treasured every adventure, they were always happiest returning home to their children and familiar surroundings.

Of all Mike accomplished, he was most proud of his family. They were his greatest joy. He took tremendous pride in his son Erik, daughter Shellie, their spouses Heidi and Matt, and their families. His grandsons, Jamie and William, were truly the light of his life.

Mike loved being a dad and grandpa, and he was happiest when surrounded by family, telling stories, sharing his wonderful sense of humor, lending a helping hand, and celebrating birthdays, holidays, and life’s milestones at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. One of his favorite memories was driving Jamie and William to school in his special 1999 Anniversary Edition Mustang and impressing William's friends.

Knowing you could always depend on Mike was a remarkable gift. He cared deeply and was always there when it mattered most: devoted husband, loving father, adoring Grandpa, trustworthy big brother, and loyal friend. He offered honest advice, unconditional support, and endless encouragement.

Mike was fun and funny, loving and affectionate, generous and kind. We celebrate the love, joy, and kindness that were the essence of who he was. His legacy lives on through his family, his friendships, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Gail; son, Erik (Heidi); daughter, Michele “Shellie” Roy (Matt); grandsons, James and William Brenegan; sister, Debra Sieger (Bob); sister-in-law, Diane Brenegan; and brother-in-law, Roger Santelman.

He is also survived by nieces, Angela Sieger Strick (Roland) and family; Danielle Sieger Erikson (Mike) and family; Tori Brenegan Bunse and family; Heather Brenegan Corbitt (Dave); Laura Goeke (Greg) and family; nephews, Robb Sieger (Sarah); Steven Santelman (Tracy) and family; Craig Santelman (Becky) and family; and cousin, Kris Jefson Erickson.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Betty Brenegan; brother, Steven Brenegan; parents-in-law, Harriet and Don Homan; brother-in-law, Paul Homan; sister-in-law, Karen Santelman; and cousins Fred Jefson and Kathy Jefson Bakken.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, and Regions Hospital for their care and compassion.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 7110 France Ave. S., Edina, MN 55435. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Mike will be laid to rest with military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Family and friends are then invited to gather for a reception at Risor of Apple Valley, 15380 Garrett Ave, Apple Valley, MN 55124, to share memories and continue celebrating Mike's life.
