Robert “Bob” Messerich, a man of profound creativity, intellect, and spirit, passed away leaving behind a legacy as a visionary, mentor, and beloved musician. To those who knew him, Bob was truly a gift—a man who moved through the world with a gentle, steady presence and an unwavering kindness. His family finds comfort in a simple, enduring truth: Bob never had a cruel bone in his body.

Born in St. Cloud on July 25, 1957, to Caroline Schmitt and Joseph Messerich, Bob was raised in a home defined by service. His mother, a war nurse, dedicated her life to caring for others, and his father, a veteran, instilled in him a deep sense of integrity. Bob’s early years at St. Mary’s Elementary and Tech High School, followed by theological studies at St. John’s University, fostered a lifelong love of philosophical conversation and a thoughtful, inquisitive approach to the world.

A true renaissance man, Bob was largely self-taught in the things that mattered most. A legendary guitarist and composer, he rose to local acclaim in the 1970s with the Firehouse band. Yet, his greatest musical legacy was not found on a stage, but in the loving partnership he shared with his daughter, Robi. Through music, their souls were deeply aligned, creating a bond that transcended words.

Bob’s hands were never idle. He spent his early career in architecture and construction, designing homes and restaurants, and sharing a meaningful professional chapter with Dale and Joel at Wesley Homes. Ever a pioneer, he later taught himself the solar energy trade, designing and installing commercial systems and taking immense pride in helping others build their own careers in the industry.

Beyond his professional work, Bob was deeply committed to the service of others. As a mentor within the AA program, he helped countless individuals navigate the difficult path to recovery, offering compassionate and steady support that truly saved lives.

Bob also possessed a remarkable sense of humor. Even in the face of hardship, he could find the absurdity in a situation and turn it into laughter. He believed the world was better faced with a joke, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and wit that continues to carry his family through their hardest days.

He was a devoted father who loved his daughters, Melody and Robi, with a pride that was pure and absolute. To witness the way he looked at them was to see a love that will endure in the music they share and the strength he instilled in them. Bob also maintained a friendship with Janet, the mother of his children, and her husband Randy, with whom he shared the joy of raising their family and celebrating many holidays together as one family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Caroline; his sister, Kathleen Kleven; his brother, Dr. Ronald Messerich; and his nephew, Joel Kleven.

He is survived by his daughters, Melody, and Robi; his grandkids Jaron and Etta; his sister Betsy Paul and brother-in-law Chris Paul; Dale and Marie Kleven; his cherished nieces and nephews, Lisa, Maggie, and Matthew; Janet & Randy; and countless members of his “sobriety family,” whom he loved deeply.

While the world is significantly less bright without him, his influence endures in every note of music, every act of kindness, and every shared laugh.

Simply put: Bob rocks.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on his birthday, July 25, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Rahn Park Pavilion and Shelter Building, 4425 Sandstone Drive, Eagan, MN 55122. All are welcome to join in honoring and remembering him.
