Thomas J. Umgelter, 60, of Two Harbors, MN, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Solvay Hospice House.  Tom was diagnosed with CJD in January and lived every moment to the fullest with the unconditional support from his soul mate, Bonnie Carlson.

Tom is survived by long-time partner Bonnie Carlson and her family, parents Connie Umgelter, Jim Umgelter and wife Marion, brother Bob Umgelter (Karen), sister Kris Wilkens (Robert), brother-in-law Bob Thomas, aunts, uncle and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, aunt and uncles, sister Sue, and his beloved fur babies Magnum, Angel and Sawyer.

Tom was a proud Marine, serving in Desert Storm; passionate about all animals big and small; loved nature, gardening and cooking.  The king of leftovers, breakfast was often an amazing recreation of dinner.  Work gave way to travel, something he enjoyed whether it was tent camping or splurging on luxury B&B’s.  Born in Milwaukee, WI Tom was also a loyal Packer fan.

Thank you to the many friends, family and care staff that have been a part of Tom’s life journey.  He will be deeply missed by so many, including his best bud Tom Frantti.

A celebration of life with military honors will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 from 10am-12pm at Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave, Duluth MN.  Memorials can be made to Animal Allies, Solvay Hospice, Cardinal Comfort Care of Two Harbors or the CJD Foundation.
