Gretchen Larson Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gretchen Larson, age 64, a beloved partner, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, teammate, and friend. Gretchen passed away after an extraordinary battle with cancer — a fight she faced with unmatched courage, faith in God, determination and grace, inspiring everyone around her with her resilience and strength. She passed at her home on the morning of May 10, surrounded by family and friends.
In 1979, had there been a “Miss Softball of Minnesota” award, Gretchen Larson undoubtedly would have earned the honor. A standout athlete at Edina East High School, Gretchen led the Hornets to a second-place finish at the state softball tournament through her exceptional hitting and pitching — the highest state tournament finish in school history at the time, as well as winning the Edina East Athena Award. Through athletics, Gretchen built lifelong friendships and treasured memories. She often said, “My closest friends are those I played with and against,” a reflection of the deep connections and respect she carried throughout her life.
A standout softball superstar at the University of Minnesota from 1980–1983, Gretchen was known not only for her athletic talent, but for her fierce spirit, competitive heart, and unwavering loyalty to those she loved. A versatile student-athlete, she expertly played nearly every position on the field for the Golden Gophers — pitcher, catcher, outfielder, and first base — earning the admiration of teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Her outstanding collegiate career led to her induction into the University Hall of Fame in 1985.
Gretchen’s love and talent for the game carried her far beyond college softball. She went on to compete internationally with the Raybestos Brakettes, helping lead the team to the American Softball Association women’s major fast pitch national titles in 1983 and 1985. She also proudly represented her country on the U.S. Tri-Nations Team in 1984 and played on first-place teams at the World Championship Tournament in London in 1985, the Netherlands Invitational in 1985, and the World Championship Tournament in New Zealand in 1986.
In recognition of her extraordinary achievements and lasting impact on the sport, Gretchen was inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 1987. In addition, her jersey was retired at the University of Minnesota in the spring of 2022 — an honor that had only ever been bestowed upon one person: Gretchen.
After achieving both local and international fame in softball, Gretchen simply found new arenas in which to compete. Her passion for athletics and competition continued throughout her life as she played hockey through WHAM (Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota), competed in YMCA basketball leagues, and became the golfer everyone hoped to have on their team. She was also an exceptional swimmer, and many believed that had she chosen swimming over softball, she would have earned collegiate recognition in that sport as well. No matter the activity, Gretchen’s natural athleticism, competitive spirit, determination, and love of teamwork always stood out.
Gretchen also demonstrated remarkable dedication and loyalty in her professional life, working for 40+ years at Minnesota Rubber & Plastics, later known as Quadion LLC and Trelleborg. Her commitment, work ethic, and dependable nature reflected the same determination and integrity that defined every aspect of her life.
Above all else, Gretchen cherished her family and friendships. She is survived by her devoted life partner, Jay Robinson; Jay’s loving daughter, Brittney; and her sisters, Anne Marie (Rick) Johnson and Cara (Mark) Barthel. She also leaves behind her cherished nieces and nephews: Paul Johnson (Alison Nesbitt), Lisa Markert (Luke), Laura Johnson and Sean Barthel (Autumn Maas) and Lindsay Hofer (Kyle). Great nieces and nephews including Isla, Jack and Lucy Johnson, Jared, Charlie and Eve Markert, Hudson and Rory Hofer, along with many dear friends and extended family members who loved her deeply. Gretch is preceded in death by her parents – Marion and Morgan Larson, her great-nephew Cooper Barthel and her beloved dog, Cotton.
Gretchen was surrounded throughout her life by friendships that were lifelong, genuine, and filled with laughter, loyalty, and unwavering support. Whether through athletics, family gatherings, or everyday moments, Gretchen had a remarkable ability to make people feel valued and welcome. She leaves behind countless friends and teammates who became family and who will forever cherish the memories, stories, humor, and love she shared so freely. Though her loss leaves an immeasurable void, her legacy of perseverance, love, and friendship will continue to live on in all who knew her.
We’d like to thank the medical staff at the Mayo Clinic, Methodist hospital and Park Nicollet clinics. As well as the many friends and family that helped throughout her battle.
A funeral / celebration of Gretchen’s life will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 4493 West 50th Street in Edina, MN 55424 on Saturday, June 20th, 2026 at 11 am.
