Edith Gervers Downing (Gervers)

Edith Gervers Downing, 93, passed away peacefully at her home on May 1, 2026. Born on February 19, 1933, in Moers, Germany, Edith lived a remarkable life filled with love, creativity, and dedication to her family and passions.

At the age of 19, Edith embarked on a bold journey to America, where she built a life defined by resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. She was the proud owner of Edith’s Knit Shop in St. Paul, a successful business that showcased her extraordinary talent as an artisan. Her gifted hands created countless beautiful pieces over the years. Among her most cherished creations were the knit coats she lovingly made for each of her daughters and the baby blankets she crafted for every new addition to the family—a tradition that embodied her deep love and care.

Edith’s talents extended beyond knitting; she was also an exceptional cook and baker who delighted in preparing meals for loved ones. Her passion for gardening brought vibrant life to her surroundings, as she cultivated a spectacular flower garden that reflected her artistic touch and appreciation for beauty.

Family was at the heart of Edith’s life. She was a devoted mother to five daughters: Diana (Mike) Kasel, Monica (Ron) Larson, Carla Kaplan, Lisa (Pat) Steinmaus, and Marlies, who preceded her in death. She also embraced her stepson David (Debbie) Downing with love. Edith’s legacy lives on through her 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and one great-great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her brother Hans Wilhelm Gervers (Nancy), numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family members in Holland and Germany.

Edith was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ed; her sister Waltrud; and her dear daughter Marlies. Though their loss was deeply felt throughout her life, Edith found strength in cherishing their memories while continuing to nurture those around her.

Edith’s warmth extended beyond family gatherings; she treasured time spent with friends and found joy in sharing stories and laughter with those close to her. Her kindness and creativity left an indelible mark on all who knew her. May Edith’s memory bring comfort to those who loved her and inspire others to live with the same grace and generosity that defined her beautiful life. A Funeral Service will be held on May 31, 2026, visitation at 02:00 PM , service at 2:30 reception to follow at St.Paul United Church of Christ 900 Summit Ave.
