Joan Mae Bieber, age 93, of Grand Marais, MN, died on April 23, 2026, at North Shore Living Care Center in Grand Marais, MN. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais with Pastor Calvin Konop officiating. Interment of the urn will be in Ellsworth Township Cemetery, Darwin, MN, on the afternoon of June 8, 2026.

Joan Mae (Werner) Bieber, the daughter of Richard and Ruby (Condon) Werner, was born in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, MN on Sunday afternoon, September 25, 1932. She grew up on a farm south of Darwin and Dassel, MN.  She attended District #24 Elementary School and then Dassel High School, graduating in 1950.  Joan became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) after graduating from the Charles T. Miller School of Practical Nursing in St. Paul. On June 8, 1955, she was united in marriage to Norman Bieber at First Lutheran Church in Dassel, MN.  Joan and Norm had three daughters, Debra, Denise, and Lori.  Norman died on December 20, 1968.  

Joan held various positions in nursing, working in hospitals, medical clinics, and care centers.  She was a volunteer at the Wells, MN, ambulance service. She retired from nursing in 1997 and moved from Wells to Grand Marais to be close to family.  In her retirement, she worked in the Trailside Quilt Shop in Grand Marais, where she loved cutting fabric, making quilts and learning quilting tips from friends and co-workers.  She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, bird watching, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends.  She was especially known for her delicious caramel rolls and bread making. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was active in the BLCW, the Rebecca Circle, and the Quilters Club.

Joan is survived by her children Debbie Bieber (Kitt Bjornson) of Las Vegas, NV, Denise (Tom) Murray of Grand Marais, MN, and Lori Bieber (Gina Franklin) of Sparks, NV; three grandchildren (Lauren Murray, Alex Murray and Sydney Bieber); 3 sisters-in-law (Mary Bieber, Judy Schmeling and Janet Werner) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Ruby Werner; husband Norman Bieber; sister, Jane Larson; and brothers Dale Werner and Roger Werner; brothers-in-law Myrwin Larson, Milbert Bieber, Doug Schmeling, Wilton (Bill) Johnson; and sisters-in-law Lois Werner, Gardella (Della) Johnson. 

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or North Shore Living Care Center Activities Department, Grand Marais, MN.
