Thomas Garvey Johnson (November 28, 1939 – April 15, 2026), age 86, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Marjorie Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne Johnson; his sister, Barb Aamot; his children Steve Johnson (Pam) and Jen Malec (Bruce); and his stepdaughter, Shelly Smith (Kelly). He was a proud grandfather to Megan Johnson (fiancé Ben), Margo Johnson, JP Oftedahl, Carter Oftedahl, Mikey Oftedahl, Kieren Smith (fiancé Coco), Miranda Smith, and Tanner Smith. He is also survived by many relatives, dear lifelong friends, and special extended family members of Linda Johnson, Dan Oftedahl and Pat Wheeler.

Tom was a talented football player at Central High School, graduating in 1957. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota. He honorably served in the Army Reserve and dedicated time to his community as a volunteer firefighter in Golden Valley. Tom had a long and dedicated career with UPS before retiring in 1985. Following his retirement, he founded GV Sales, where he worked as a business forms broker until 2022.

Tom was deeply involved with the American Legion Post 1 in Minneapolis, where he served in multiple roles over the years, including Commander in 1992. He brought joy to many as Santa Claus for over 20 years. He was known for his quick wit and gift for poetry.

Tom and Joanne shared a passion for traveling the world together and spending time boating in the Red Wing area. Above all, he cherished time with his family and took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

A memorial service celebrating Tom’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave S, Edina. The service will begin at 1:00pm with visitation one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation in Tom’s memory.

Tom will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.
