A gifted scholar, he excelled academically, earning recognition in statewide mathematics competitions. David attended Jackson P. Burley high school and served as class president. He also played on the basketball team and was a saxophonist in the marching band.

He was a member of the Distinguished Gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as chapter president and leading with integrity, purpose, and heart. Through his leadership, he built lasting bonds that shaped the lives of many. David is remembered by his classmates as a steady presence and a true friend.
David moved to Minneapolis to work for Honeywell, where he contributed to designing control systems for space shuttles and helicopters. While at Honeywell, David earned an MBA from the College of St Thomas now known as St Thomas University. He also worked as Lead Research Scientist for the Minnesota Department of Health, continuing his work with excellence and purpose.
David taught mathematics and statistics at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) and Cardinal Stritch University in Minnesota and tutored many family members and friends.
In May of 1972, David married the love of his life, Rhoda Miller. Together they welcomed two children, David in 1974 and Lara in 1978, who were his greatest joys. He was affectionately known as “Do,” a nickname given to him by Lara. He also held special bonds with cousins Shawnee Tate, Will Taylor, Bryant Witcher, Marilyn Edwards and bonus grandchildren Gavin Caldwell, and William Sanders—each one a source of warmth, laughter, and deep affection in his life.

David will be remembered for his intellect, caring spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. His legacy lives on in all those he taught, loved, and inspired.
