Michael McCoy, age 83, passed away peacefully in hospice care on Jan 14, 2026 in Savage, Minnesota, surrounded by family.

Michael was born in Winona, Minnesota, and spent his early years roaming the backwaters of the Mississippi River, fishing, exploring, and developing a lifelong love of nature. His family later moved to Mankato. It was there, while attending Mankato State University, that Michael met Carol, the woman who would become his partner in life, adventure, and love.

Michael was a devoted, generous, and sincere man who was always rooting for the underdog. A lifelong learner, he earned his master’s degree in Oceanography, studying in Corvallis, Oregon, and Bridgewater, Massachusetts. During this time, he took his young family across the country, reflecting both his spirit of adventure and his deep commitment to education and family.

He went on to spend his career as a middle school science and math teacher, inspiring countless students through his curiosity, patience, and belief in their potential. Known for his motto, “firm but fair,” Michael held high expectations while always rooting for his students’ success. In his later years, he dedicated himself to teaching at-risk students, driven by a profound desire to help others succeed. He also taught geology at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, sharing his love of the natural world in a setting that combined learning, exploration, and mentorship.

After retiring, Michael and his wife, Carol, moved to Georgetown, Texas, where they became active leaders in the Fine Arts Club, specializing in stained and fused glass. Michael loved to dance and brought joy to many by teaching line dances to friends and members of the community.

Michael is survived by his wife, Carol McCoy; his children, Michelle McCoy and Eric McCoy (Niki Simonds, Dylan and Ian Simonds); and his three grandchildren, Clara McCoy, Quinn McCoy (Karlee), and Chloe McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, that will not be forgotten.
