Thomas Clayton “Tom” McNeil December 25, 1945 – April 2, 2026

Thomas Clayton McNeil (Tom) passed away peacefully on April 2nd, 2026, at the age of 80 after a long battle with dementia.

Born on Christmas Day in 1945 in San Francisco, California, Tom was the son of Clayton and Edna McNeil. A lifelong resident of the Bay Area, he carried with him a deep appreciation for music, nature, and adventure.

Tom devoted his career to the music industry, combining technical skill with entrepreneurial spirit. In the 1970s, he founded Magic Music Machines, an amplifier repair shop in San Francisco that became a trusted hub for musicians. He later established Magic Parts, a wholesale musical electronics business that expanded his reach worldwide. His work took him across the globe, including China, Europe, and Russia, where he built lasting relationships and shared his passion for music.

Beyond his professional life, Tom was a man of wide-ranging interests. An accomplished piano player, he found joy in music both as a craft and a lifelong companion. He loved sailing, hiking, and backpacking, and spent countless hours exploring the natural beauty of Northern California. He was actively involved with the Marin County Open Space District Board, reflecting his commitment to preserving the outdoors he cherished. A devoted fan of the San Francisco 49ers, Tom rarely missed a game. He also enjoyed traveling for pleasure, with memorable journeys to Europe and Tibet.

Tom was known for his strong will, sharp humor, and independent spirit. He approached life with curiosity and determination, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Tali McNeil; his close friend and walking partner Margaret Duncan; his sister, Mary Butterfield; and his close friend, Andrew Lederer.
