It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Ivor Winton on March 28, 2026. Ivor passed away at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis while visiting from Vancouver, BC, with his partner and spouse of 50 years, Juan Atanacio Felipe-Torres. Ivor had been in declining health since being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in July 2020.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ivor was an alumnus of Glasgow University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Minnesota. In 2019, he retired from the Geography Department at Simon Fraser University in Canada.

Both colleagues and students held Ivor in high esteem, in no small part due to his booming voice, erudite and knowledge in all things esoteric.

Additionally, Ivor and Juan traveled extensively and often to Europe, initially to visit aging parents in Glasgow. Having written his master's thesis on wine, they traveled to France, Italy and France in search of the "Holy Grail" of wine. Finally settling in La Begude de Mazenc, France, where they made repeated visits, they shared a wine cellar with Andrew and Ulrike, dear friends and former residents of Canada.

Three cousins in Scotland and England, as well as many in-laws in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area survive Ivor. Following a private cremation, he will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, in recognition of his spouse's service as a U.S. military veteran.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis or the University of Minnesota Libraries.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for family and friends at a later date in Minneapolis and Vancouver, Canada.
