Marlys Ann Sundheim, age 78, passed away suddenly on March 2, 2026, at Essentia Health in Duluth, Minnesota, with her loving family by her side.
Marlys was born on November 7, 1947, in Monticello, Minnesota, to Waldemar and Helen Sundheim. She graduated from Hibbing High School and soon after followed her adventurous spirit west to California, where she would spend most of her life building her career, friendships, and cherished memories.
California always held a special place in Marlys’s heart. She embraced the sunshine, mild ocean breezes, and the vibrant energy of the Bay Area. She especially loved visiting San Francisco — riding BART into the city, attending live theater performances, shopping, dining out, and catching the latest movies. The beauty, diversity, and excitement of California life suited her perfectly, and it became home in every sense of the word.
Marlys worked for many years at GM/New United Motors, where she was employed in Quality Control until her retirement. She took pride in her work and the friendships she formed there.
In recent years, Marlys returned to Hibbing, Minnesota, to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She was happy to be surrounded by loved ones.
Marlys enjoyed staying active. She loved exercising at the gym, traveling to new places, and especially cruising — always looking forward to the next destination and adventure. Whether exploring a new city, enjoying a play, or simply sharing a meal out, she treasured experiences and the joy of living fully.
She was deeply devoted to her faith and was actively involved in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her faith provided her strength and community throughout her life.
Marlys is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Dan) Fairbanks; her sister, Gail Sundheim; her brothers, Leroy Sundheim and her twin brother, Mervyn Sundheim; her grandchildren, Crystal Buchwitz, Jeffrey Buchwitz, and Drew (Kira) Buchwitz; and her great-grandchildren, Katrina Lossing, Gavin Buchwitz, and Cooper Buchwitz. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the surgeons, nurses, and dedicated staff at Essentia Health for their tireless efforts and compassionate care. We are especially grateful to Dr. Panagiotis Panagiotakis, Dr. Jacob Lescher, and Dr. Wamunyima Akakulu for their skill, dedication, and kindness during a difficult time. A special thank you as well to Kathy S. and the exceptional ICU nurses and staff on the 10th Floor, whose comfort, attentiveness, and gentle care meant so much to Marlys and to our family.
Marlys will be remembered for her warmth, independence, love of adventure, and the deep love she had for her family.
