Douglas Paul Wasko, age 91, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis.
Doug was born on July 15, 1934, to Francis and Elsa (Kersten) Wasko and grew up on Toronto Street in St. Paul, Minnesota. From a young age, he embraced an active life, spending countless hours playing baseball, football, and hockey. He graduated from Monroe High School (Class of ‘53), where his dedication to physical fitness and discipline earned him the bodybuilding title of “Mr. St. Paul.”
Following high school, Doug proudly served in the United States Marine Corps (1954-1957). During his service, his platoon guarded atomic testing sites in Nevada, and he was later recognized as an Atomic Veteran. His military service remained a source of pride and identity throughout his life.
Doug went on to earn both a Bachelor of Science (1961) and a Master of Education (1963) degree from the University of Minnesota, with graduate studies focused on recreation. His professional career reflected his commitment to education and people, he served as a recreation director for the City of St. Paul, then held student affairs leadership positions at Macalester College, Western Washington University, and Augsburg College. Later, he transitioned into a career as an insurance agent with Farmers Insurance, where he continued to build lasting relationships with colleagues and clients.
On December 17, 1960, Doug married Karen Larson at St. Luke Lutheran Church in St. Paul. Their marriage was rooted in faith, family, and community. Doug remained active at St. Luke throughout his life, where he and Karen were married and where all of their children were confirmed.
Doug lived in St. Paul and Richfield, Minnesota, as well as Bellingham, Washington, and he cherished time spent outdoors. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, dancing, traveling, and enthusiastically supporting Minnesota Gopher sports. He loved coaching youth hockey and baseball and sharing his musical talents on the accordion, piano, and guitar. Some of his most treasured moments were spent at the family cabin in Park Rapids, Minnesota, surrounded by nature, friends, and family.
Doug is survived by his children, Paul (Lori), Peter, and Kristin (Hugh (dec), Patrick); his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Benjamin (Emmarae), Emma (Isaiah), and Ashley; and his great-grandchildren, Harrison and Henrik. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Elsa Wasko; his brother, Robert Wasko; and his beloved wife, Karen Wasko.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held on April 11th at 12:00 PM (visitation from 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM) at St Luke Lutheran Church, 1807 Field Ave, St. Paul, MN 55116. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.
Doug will be remembered for his deep faith and his love of family and friends.
