Lyle Henry Pater, age 57, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2026, after a courageous 2½‑year battle with cancer.
Lyle was born on March 17, 1968, in Würzburg, Germany, to John and Karla Pater. He grew up in Worthington, Minnesota, and graduated from Worthington High School in 1986. A lifelong learner, Lyle earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics, a Master of Science in Industrial Management, and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. His family often described him as one of the smartest people in any room—someone who could always be counted on to know the answer.
While attending Mankato State University, Lyle met the love of his life, Paula Erickson. They were married on April 29, 1989, and together they welcomed two children, Jordyn and Zachariah, who were the pride of his life.
Lyle dedicated more than 30 years to the field of quality control. His career began at MCP in Marshall, Minnesota, followed by a move to ADM in Decatur, Illinois. He later joined Nestlé, where his work brought him to Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Bridgewater, New Jersey; and Arlington, Virginia. He retired on October 31, 2025, and returned to Woodbury, Minnesota, to be closer to family and friends.
One of Lyle’s greatest joys was spending time at the lake in Brainerd, Minnesota, where he fulfilled his dream of owning a cabin on the water. He loved being outdoors—fishing, biking, tossing bean bags—and most of all, captaining the pontoon on North Long Lake. To him, the cabin was a place for family, laughter, and creating cherished memories together.
Lyle will be remembered for his sharp mind, his deep love for his family, and the quiet strength and warmth he brought to every part of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Paula Pater; daughter Jordyn (Elizabeth) and grandson Camden; son Zachariah (Sidney); siblings Nichole (Dino) and Joni (Chris); brothers‑in‑law Tim (Joan) and Todd (Mary); and his nieces and nephews. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, John and Karla Pater; grandparents Charles and Dena Pater and Henry and Grace Bruner; father‑in‑law Gordon Erickson; and mother‑in‑law Faye Strong.
A Celebration of Life for Lyle will be held at Surly Brewing Co., 520 Malcolm Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN, on Saturday, March 21st, 2026, from 12–3pm.
