Richard Berland, beloved husband, magnificent father, and doting grandfather, passed away peacefully on the 25th of January at the age of 81. Rick was a vital presence in our lives and he will be deeply missed.
Rick was born on October 10, 1944 in St. Paul, MN. He met his wife Judy in high school and they made their lives together a great adventure filled with children, grandchildren, friends, travel, and hobbies. He became a great outdoorsman and shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with his family, who loved to spend time with him in the woods and on the water. He became a master woodworker, designing and making several pieces of fine hand-crafted furniture which are admired and proudly used by his family. He brought his infectious positive energy to all he did, and taught his family to do the same - preaching the importance of “attitude and preparation”.
He worked hard at each stage of his professional life, starting his career as a teacher before spending many years as a successful financial planner. Throughout his career he conscientiously developed new skills to stay at the forefront of his field, including writing his own customer management software at the beginning of the personal computer age.
Above all, Rick was a devoted family man.He was always ready to enjoy time with his four children and then his nine grandchildren, and he looked forward to family visits more than anything. Rick and Judy traveled the world together to develop loving relationships with each of their grandchildren. Rick was adored and revered by his grandkids. He was deeply proud of each one of them, and delighted in hearing about their adventures and accomplishments. He loved hosting his extended family and friends at their lake home, and he will live on in many cherished memories of wonderful times with family.
Rick is survived by his wife Judy; his children and their spouses Carolyn and Jari, Keith, Brian and Julie, and Deborah and Chris; his grandchildren Naomi, Tallie, Lance, Jesse, Alex, Alisa, Maura, Brennan and Ben. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Berland and Burl Sheldon; by Chuck and Sue Muscoplat, Rick Muscoplat and Ann Obst, Jean and Jerry Sadoff; Helen and Tom Jeub, Jim Manos; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
We honor his memory and are grateful for his presence in our lives. No formal service is scheduled at this time. The family requests donations to the Minnesota chapter of the Parkinson’s foundation in lieu of flowers.
