My deepest sympathy to the whole family on their loss of Steve. I have just learned of his death hence the delay. I was introduced to Steve by Carol Christensen. Although we never met in person, we had many professional interactions over the years. I greatly appreciated not only his expert advice but the way he delivered it. He was generous in sharing not only his technical expertise but also his perspective and approaches to problem solving and managing organizational dynamics. Truly a great teacher and a wonderful colleague. Henryka Komanska, Ph.D.

Dear Marcey,
Steve worked with me as a consultant years ago on several projects while I was at Colgate. Whenever I got discouraged by some sort of roadblock, Steve would cheerfully help me find a way either over it or around it. He’d suggest solutions for research problems and then would help create the best ways to explain the solutions to my own clients. He had a knack for depicting statistical concepts visually that were impactful and compelling. He made me look so good!
And Steve was a lot of fun to work with. His positive outlook and his enthusiasm set an example for me, and probably for many of us. When I remember his upbeat demeanor, it makes me smile.
I’m so sorry for your loss, and our loss. My sincere condolences.

We (Pillsbury R&D) hired Steve to be a Statistician. He was all of that...and so much more! Steve had a unique gift to go well beyond the numbers and into the real issues that made a difference. He was into innovation way before it became a buzz word for creativity. And...he did it in a positive and genuine way with a smile on his face.

Condolences to Marcey and the family. He said your name many times Marcey. I never met you but I know he thought the world of you and the kids, because he said so. I will never forget his stories or his thoughtfulness. He was such a positive person. He deserves the rewards of Heaven. I wish you all healing.

I just found out that Steve was gone. And it has been only a few weeks since I found out that he was sick. I'm not ready to comment but I must...because my mind is going a million miles an hour with memories and I can't sleep. I think that was the speed of Steve's mind. And he could barely sleep. I knew Steve and Marcey for 50 years and I have the pictures to prove it. We met in college. We were the same age but they were my surrogate parents. They were my shelter in the storm. If I needed a home cooked meal, they always provided it. I was honored to be at their wedding and to watch their kids grow up. But then I moved to Florida. Thankfully we stayed in touch. I always saw them when I visited Minnesota. And it was great when they bought a place in Ft. Myers so that I could see them more often. In the early days I tried to stump Steve with difficult math questions. I gave up on that. I tried to read his PhD thesis. I gave up on that. I always marveled at his intelligence, his generosity, and his wonderful relationship with Marcey. I laughed when he struggled buying Twins tickets on-line a few years ago. And I even had the pleasure of sampling his bagels and bread. I have so many stories. I had a key to their house in Plymouth, and I invited the police over twice. I would add some pictures, but I am too sad to look for them. I'm so happy that I was able to see Steve and Marcey this past July. Most importantly I offer my best wishes to Marcey, the kids, and the grandkids. It is such a huge loss.

Steve was one of a kind. Professionally he was dedicated to getting results and was an incredible leader helping to coach and teach innovation best practices across Pillsbury/General Mills. He made a real impact on the organization.
Personally, Steve was a good friend who I looked forward to connecting with for tips on bike trails to check out and kayak trips to try as well as books to read and shows to watch but mainly, just sharing what was going on in each others lives. It feels unfair to have him leave this world so young.
