Michael Alan Oberembt, known affectionately to many as “Obes,” passed away due to complications from influenza on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. A Visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree (1500 Park Place Blvd). A Memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m., with dinner afterward.
In keeping with Michael’s wishes, the evening will continue with live music, dancing, and the sharing of stories from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.
Michael was born on March 3, 1980, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Marla Andrews and Russell Oberembt. He graduated from Park Center High School in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota in 1998. Michael was a self-taught IT technician and beloved coworker of many years. He was widely known as a fixture of the Minneapolis music scene he adored, and will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and loyalty.
Michael’s zest for life was boundless. His greatest joys included football, live music, poker, good food, and any chance to be near the water. Michael treasured time spent visiting friends at the lake, adventures in the Las Vegas desert, soaking up the Arizona sun, and watching sunsets on Hawaiian beaches. More than anything, he valued connection—showing up for friends, sharing laughter, and creating lasting memories.
Michael is survived by his brother, Lance; his grandmother, Ann; his uncles Myles Andrews and Rick (Cindy) Oberembt; his aunt Lee Lenahan; and many cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marla, and his father, Russell. His spirit lives on in the music, laughter, and friendships he cherished.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted by the family for MS Society of Minnesota.
