Richard A. Anderson of St. Paul, Minnesota, died peacefully on January 11, 2026, at the age of 84. He was a resident of Eagan Pointe Senior Living and, at the end of his life, received compassionate care from St. Croix Hospice.
Richard was born on September 10, 1941, in Vermillion, South Dakota, to Richard H. Anderson and Dorothy Anderson (Brammer). As the son of a career military serviceman, Richard spent his childhood moving between postings, though he always considered the family farm in Vermillion to be his true home.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in Collegeville and went on to a lifelong career in the property and casualty insurance industry as a fire protection engineer. Throughout his career, he worked with major clients including Toro, Polaris, H.B. Fuller, and Minnesota’s three nuclear power plants. He retired from Marsh & McLennan but continued consulting for several years thereafter.
Richard was deeply committed to youth athletics, serving as a hockey referee for more than 25 years. When he was no longer able to skate, he remained involved by working with the Roseville High School hockey teams as an announcer and timekeeper. A devoted alumnus, Richard maintained a lifelong relationship with St. John’s University, frequently attending football games and returning to campus whenever possible.
He was a faithful supporter of his community, including the local food shelf and the St. Joseph Indian Community in Vermillion. Richard and his wife were longtime members of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Victoria. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Liz; his daughter, Sheila (Jason); his son, Eric (Kendra); and his most cherished granddaughter, Olivia. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack (Garry) and Bob (Ruth); and nieces Katy (Adam), Marcy (Jeff), and Amy (Ryan).
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4537 3rd Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55419, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. His family is hosting a luncheon at the church following the service.
