Joyce Janelle Berdie (Elliott), 77, of Minneapolis, was diagnosed with leukemia on January 7, and succumbed to a stroke two days later at Methodist Hospital. She was born on April 7, 1948 to Paul and Ruby (Hanson) Elliott, and raised in Atwater, MN. She got her degree from the U of M, where she met the love of her life, Carl; they married on October 7, 1972, and had two daughters, Amber and Zoë. Joyce worked as an Associate Educator at Burroughs, Hale, Holland, and Sullivan Elementary Schools until her retirement in 2011. She loved travel, sailing with Carl from Lake Superior on three different voyages: in 1977 to Martinique, in 1998 to Trinidad for Carnival, with their daughters, and in 2011 to the Bahamas, along with many other adventures. She loved discovering new music, especially blues and reggae; she went to Record Store Day at the Electric Fetus religiously. She loved going to the Fair, attending at least three times per year with her daughters and grandchildren, or by herself. Joyce was frequently described as the “glue” of the extended family, documenting every gathering in photos. Her kind, extroverted, and upbeat personality attracted numerous friends over the years, and she was a faithful correspondent by letter and, later, social media. To meet Joyce was to be counted as a friend. She was a talented cook, baker, hostess, gardener, and an avid reader and lover of theater and movies, but her greatest joy was being a mom and a “Grammie.” Joyce is survived by her husband Carl; daughters, Amber (Chris) Einerwold of Big Lake and Zoë (Josh) Joiner of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Laura, Owen, Maya, and Lucy; her sister, Diane Huesman, and brother, Will Elliott, both of AZ; brothers- and sisters-in-law Phyllis and Bob Porter, Doug Berdie and Elaine Hauff; and many extended family and friends. A celebration of life will be at First Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Ave S, Mpls., on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. It will be streamed on YouTube. Please wear bright colors! In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Minnesota State Fair Foundation are encouraged.
