Gary D. Schabert, 73, of Oakdale, MN, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, leaving a void in the hearts of all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Wilfrid and Lillian, and is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Jacalyn; daughter Heather (Schabert) Bennett and her spouse, Joseph; son Christopher Schabert and his fiancée, Ashley; three cherished grandchildren Joseph and Robert Bennett and Connor Breeden; and, in a bond as deep as family, three bonus daughters : Kelly Gerber, Beth Knutson, and Heather Bush; along with many treasured family and friends.
Born June 13, 1952, in Austin, MN, and raised in St. Paul, MN, Gary was a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served with honor for 22 years. After retiring, he dedicated over 23 years to veterans at the Minneapolis VA Hospital, employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse, served as a Local 1969 steward and engaged in passionate volunteerism. Gary’s spirit shone brightest in his adventures, traveling the world with his wife, joyful bowling nights, spirited Cribbage games, and precious moments with loved ones. He loved with an open heart, was deeply cherished in return, and his absence leaves an irreplaceable void. Gary will forever live on in our hearts and souls, honored and profoundly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held March 6, 2026, Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 8260 4th St. N., Oakdale, MN 55128 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior. Luncheon to follow in Fellowship Hall. Interment March 9, 2026, Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, 7601 34th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 10:30 AM.
