David Lee Lund Obituary

David Lee Lund, 75, passed away peacefully at home, with his wife of nearly 48 years at his side.  Born in Minneapolis to Charles Jerome Lund and Shirley Meyers Lund, David and his family moved around a lot in his youth because of his father's engineering job.  He always said he was the only person he knew who went to three kindergartens in one year. Several of his early years were spent in the Cleveland area before the family moved back to Minnesota where he graduated from Edina High School in 1967. He earned his bachelor's degree from University of California-Riverside and didn't know what he would do next, but it wouldn't be working in the battery industry like his father had.  So of course he began his 25+ year professional career as an engineer and inventor at  Exide battery in Pennsylvania, eventually moving back to Minnesota again to work for Gould Battery, which became GNB battery. You get the idea. He worked in research and development and was proud of being named an inventor on 23 patents through those years.

A witty, whip-smart, sensitive introvert with a great sense of humor, he uncharacteristically started a conversation with a woman sitting across the aisle from him on a flight aboard the friendly skies of United in December 1976.  Who could resist, he later said, a woman snoring so vigorously that objects fell out of the uncovered overhead bins and oxygen masks dangled up and down at every breath.  The drooling was especially fetching. There's more than one version to that origin story.  He and that woman, Jane Curry, married fifteen months later and, unlike the lad of his peripatetic youth, have lived in the same house in the same city of Minneapolis for nearly five decades.

When a young newlywed couple moved in next door almost thirty years ago and then started their family,  David and Jane became honorary grandparents to their three kiddos--Chloe, Maisy and Henry--in an enduring relationship that enriched David's life beyond measure. Those babies, now adults, took up residence in his heart for life.

David was a connoisseur of really bad B movies, particularly 1950's science fiction.  He even loved good movies and could always offer the names of even fifth-billed actors in the cast, whether you wanted him to or not. And of course he shared Rocky and Bullwinkle with the kiddos. He was an avid fisherman, bridge player, and scuba diver.  He taught community education classes in duplicate bridge and ran games at the Edina Senior Center for several years.  He and Jane shared a passion for scuba diving that sent them on several once-in-a-lifetime adventures over 25 years to explore the underwater marvels of the Great Barrier Reef, Palau, Fiji, Grand Cayman, Socorro Islands, Cocos Islands, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Mexico, Turks and Caicos, Bonaire, Sea of Cortez, and more.  David also loved the challenges of cave diving in the cenotes of Mexico's Yucatan jungle  and wreck diving in Lake Superior and Truk Lagoon.

Up until about three weeks before he died, he had been creating comic strips, learning a little bit about AI to do the characters, and generally trying to focus on something other than his health issues.   Curious, creative, funny, persevering, and generous to the end. For his last gift, his eyes were donated to Lions Gift of Sight in the hope that someone's life will be transformed for the better.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles Lund, David is survived by his wife Jane Curry, sister-in-law Barbara Curry, and chosen family Troy, Amy, Chloe, Maisy and Henry Johnson. An informal gathering to celebrate David's life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, 2:00 pm at Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 East 50th Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55417. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorials preferred to Second Harvest Heartland Food Bank or your favorite charity.
