Rosemarie Wirtz "Rose" Hilk Obituary

September 1, 1944 – November 10, 2025

Rosemarie "Rose" Hilk—extraordinary mother, legendary host, certified BBQ judge, and a woman who believed the secret to a good life was a warm welcome and a full table—left this world on November 10, 2025. She was 81 years young.

Born on September 1, 1944, Rose was a Catholic girl from Mound who married a Lutheran boy from Waconia. She met Ronald Hilk when their social circles collided in their twenties, sparking a relationship that endured over 50 years. Together, they built a life defined by deep loyalty and a partnership so strong it could survive anything—even judging barbeque competitions together.

For 55 years, she worked at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, demonstrating a work ethic that was as formidable as it was inspiring.

But her true life’s work was found in how she nurtured her family. To her children, Caroline and Russ, she always ensured that home was a place where you felt welcome, heard, and cared for. Yet, she loved no one more than her three grandchildren: Benjamin, Julia and Amalie. As the curator of fantastic experiences, she shared her nurturing spirit with the next generation and will be fondly remembered for her peanut butter banana sandwiches, caramel corn, and cinnamon toast.

With Ron at her side, her diligent sous chef, Rose welcomed people from every walk of life to sit at their table and enjoy delicious meals. She dove deeply into the things she loved including her volunteer service at Loaves and Fishes for more than 40 years. As a cook and coordinator, she fed the community with the same culinary excellence she gave her own family. As a UMN Extension Master Gardener, she cultivated joy through her plants and teaching. Whether she was plating a roast or tending a bloom, Rose was constantly working to make the world a more nurturing, beautiful, and colorful place to live.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald; her daughter, Caroline Hilk (Paul Bogard) and granddaughter Amalie; and her son, Russell Hilk (Naomi) and grandchildren Benjamin and Julia—all of whom carry forward her lessons in love. She is also survived by her brother, Tom Wirtz. Rose is now reunited with her parents, Marie and Herbert Wirtz, and her sister, Gayle Anderson. She is likely already reorganizing the heavenly kitchen, critiquing the landscaping at the Pearly Gates, and making sure everyone has a seat at the table.

A celebration of Rose’s life will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina Chapel (7110 France Ave S). Visitation begins at 2:00 PM, with a service at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Rose by donating to Loaves & Fishes, the University of Minnesota Arboretum, or your local food shelf. Better yet, plant a flower, toast a friend, or feed someone who needs it.
