Carolyn Phelps Obituary

Dr. Carolyn Phelps

(Born: April 22, 1959 – Died: Monday, October 13, 2025)

On a beautiful fall day, full of color, as was Carolyn herself, we said goodbye to Dr. Carolyn Phelps of Duluth, Minnesota. She passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025, due to pancreatic cancer.

To know Carolyn was to be drawn into her orbit of warmth and light. She was a steady, radiant, determined presence who met everyone with curiosity, humor, and an unwavering belief in their potential. A dear friend once said of her, "She could find sunshine in a hurricane"—and indeed, Carolyn had a gift for illuminating the path forward, no matter how dark the storm.

Born in Germany and later a proud naturalized U.S. citizen, Carolyn was a citizen of the world—incredibly well-traveled, with stories that spanned continents and cultures. Her international roots gave her a unique perspective and deep appreciation for diverse ways of living and being. Yet she intentionally made Duluth her home, choosing this community with the same thoughtfulness she brought to everything in her life. She often said with a knowing smile, "I don't live here for the weather. I live here for the people." And what a gift that choice was to all of us.

Throughout her life, Carolyn modeled the very qualities she inspired in others: courage, compassion, and a deep belief in the possibility of growth and healing.

Carolyn approached her work with a rare blend of intellect, heart, and humanity. Over her distinguished career, she served as a trusted clinician, educator, and community leader, profoundly shaping behavioral health care across the region. For over two decades at the Human Development Center and most recently as founder of DreamLife Psychological Services, she provided compassionate, evidence-based care to individuals and families, specializing in eating disorders, performance enhancement, and sports psychology. Her influence extended beyond the therapy room through her long-running PBS show, Speak Your Mind, where she made psychological insights accessible and meaningful to all.

Carolyn’s commitment to innovation and service also led her to work within Minnesota’s Sixth Judicial District, where she helped advance the state’s early treatment court initiatives, bringing clinical expertise, empathy, and systems thinking to the intersection of justice and behavioral health.

Carolyn's journey through movement was as varied and vibrant as her love of the music that accompanied it. From her early days as a professional dancer, she understood the power of the body in motion. Later in life, she found joy and purpose in figure skating, ultimately becoming an Adult State Champion in Minnesota. She loved encouraging others to rediscover the simple joy of gliding across the ice, and to embrace challenge and growth at every stage of life. On the rink, as in life, she was graceful, determined, and utterly fearless.

Carolyn's life was also marked by deep partnership and shared purpose with her late husband, John Haire, an educator whose own life of service reflected their mutual commitment to

learning, community, and kindness. Together, they built a legacy of compassion and curiosity that touched countless lives in the Duluth area. In a moment both tender and profound, as Carolyn passed, her phone lit up—illuminating the picture of John on its homescreen, as if to welcome her home.

A devoted cat person, Carolyn loved everything that entailed—the quiet companionship, the gentle purring, the independent spirits who chose to share their lives with her. She leaves behind her beloved feline companion, Olive, who brought her daily joy and comfort.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Haire, and is lovingly survived by her parents, Keith and Marianne Phelps, of Bellingham, Washington, who instilled in her the values of empathy, perseverance, and integrity; her cherished cat, Olive; and dear friends, colleagues, clients, and the broader community she served with grace and insight.

Carolyn’s legacy is a simple but powerful reminder: Be kind, love deeply, and care for yourself as tenderly as you care for others.

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held on Saturday, November 15th, at Northland Country Club from 2 to 4 p.m. All who knew and loved Carolyn are welcome to spend time honoring her life in close embrace with others.
