Terrence “Terry” Smith Member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians 1949 – 2025


Terrence “Terry” Smith, a proud member of the Red Cliff Band of Ojibwe, passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones. Terry was a deeply loved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather whose kindness, humor, and unwavering compassion touched countless lives.


Terry dedicated his life to serving others and uplifting his community. He was the Director of New Visions in Minneapolis, the first American Indian treatment center in the United States and later served as Director of Indian Education for Duluth Public Schools. He was also the founder and owner of Spirit Bay Trading Company, where his artistry and commitment to Native culture were shared with many. Terry served on the Duluth Indian Commission and on numerous boards and committees throughout his life, always striving to make a positive difference.


A gifted artist and jewelry crafter, Terry continued creating beautiful pieces until the day he died. He especially enjoyed working with kids, sharing his knowledge, humor, and love of life. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and took great joy in being surrounded by them. He was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 47 years, a testament to his strength and dedication to helping others along their journeys.


He is survived by his wife: Kathy Smith, children: Tina Sullivan (Mike), Terry Smith Jr. (Suzi), Angela Smith, Eric Smith, Nicholas Smith (Caitlin), Nathan Smith (Classie), and Natalie Smith; siblings: Sue Nilsson (Bob), Betsy Peacock (Tom), Tamara Smith, Rick Smith (Dede), Sandy Lindberg (Herb), Candy Sunski, Sylvan Larson (Dawn), Char Suave (Steve), David Smith, Jeanne Smith, Thomas Fruth (Laurie); as well as many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.


Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lou Pouti; father, Rupert Smith; daughter, Becky Smith; grandson, Dylan Whitfield; grandson, John Sullivan; nephew, Pete Nilsson; and son, Daniel Geyer.


The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Fekete, Dr. Hollatz, Dr. Christianson, Dr. Evans and Dr. Hutchinson and the entire team at Aspirus St. Luke’s for their outstanding and compassionate care during Terry’s illness.


A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 1st, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, 835 West College Street, Duluth, Minnesota. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be provided following the service, and all are welcome to attend.


Terry will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
