Thomas "Tommy" Kertz Obituary

January 20, 1957 – October 21, 2025

It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Thomas “Tommy” Kertz, who passed away at his home in Minnetonka, MN October 21, 2025, at the age of 68. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Tommy had a heart of gold — always the first to lend a hand, share advice, and unmatched perseverance. He never quit until the job was done perfectly. Born in Langdon, North Dakota, on January 20, 1957, he was the beloved son of Robert and Donna Kertz.

A skilled craftsman and astute businessman, Tommy owned and operated a successful commercial floorcovering firm. His mastery of his trade and his talent for home repair and restoration were unmatched. There was truly nothing Tommy couldn’t build or fix. His patience, pride in his work, and tireless dedication were only rivaled by his humor and the twinkle in his eye that signaled a good-natured joke was coming.

Tommy shared 35 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Lynn. Together, they spent their summers at their cherished cottage on Lake of the Woods in Canada — their happy place — originally built around 1936. Tommy took great pride in being the steward of its legacy, ensuring the cottage remained a lasting part of their family’s story. Each summer, they delighted in catching walleye, watching sunsets over Bathing Beauty Bay, and chasing the elusive northern lights.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn, and his seven siblings: John Kertz, partner Lisa Gunderson, Julie (Jim) Rochat, Mike (Robyn) Kertz, Mary Stovall, Tracy (Paul) Phelps, Paula Arthur, and Joseph (Martha) Kertz. In-laws, Jeanne Hammond, partner Doug Cowan, Barbara (Ed) Aster, Rodney DeFrance and Jack (Angela) Metcalf. He was a proud and loving uncle to Harrison and Amy, Jenny and Matthew, Sydney and Cameron, Allison and Brady, Morgan, Chase, and Joie, Joseph, Erika, and Ezekiel, Zach and Zoe.

Tommy will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, humor, and love will live on in the hearts and homes of everyone he touched.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 4:00 PM at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, 5601 West 78th St, Bloomington, MN, 55439. The family invites you to bring memories and stories to share as we gather to honor and celebrate Tommy’s remarkable life. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
